Overview

The existing biological sciences building is one of the largest buildings situated on the Mile End Road campus for the University. The building built in the early 1960’s comprises 6 floors and is a concrete framed, precast concrete and single glazed metal window building with very large areas of sloping glazing. The building is either too cold in winter or too hot in summer.

The works involves the total replacement of the metal windows and sloping glazing with new double glazed curtain walling, including the use of photovoltaic panels and the over-cladding of the un-insulated precast cladding with a new insulated aluminium rain screen.

During the project we were instructed to provide new insulation and recover most of the roof areas.

Because of the nature of the building over the years many extract systems and air-conditioning units had been installed on the face of the building. These all required to be rationalised and relocated to allow the cladding works to proceed.

The building is serviced by two external stair cores attached to the building. These required to be insulated and rendered using a coloured render system.

During this project the building remained in full use and occupation.
